The Texas Rangers look to stay red hot and distance themselves from the pack in the American League West as they take to the road to face off against the Seattle Mariners.
The Rangers are on a tear right now having won nine of their last ten games and are making a serious push at claiming top spot in the American League as the playoffs are around the corner and the Rangers look as good as anyone to emerge out of the AL. Texas will send their Cy Young candidate to the bump here as Cole Hamels will look to get his 15th victory of the season as he takes on Felix Hernandez at Safeco Field in what should be a very exciting pitching show down between two of the league’s best, but it is the visitors who have the deeper lineup and are certainly playing the better baseball right now.
USA TODAY Sports
The Mariners have gone on a woeful 2-8 stretch and are playing their way out of contention in the AL wild card spot as they are now a full five games behind the second wild card spot in the league and will need to reverse course if they’re going to challenge for that spot. The M’s came into the season looking to challenge for the AL West division crown but have fallen short of that forecast and haven’t quite gotten the starting pitching that many anticipated and while King Felix has held up his end for the most part he has also missed some time on the disable list. Felix is 9-5 with a 3.48 ERA this season but pales in comparison to Hamels who is 14-4 with a 2.91 mark and is certainly among a handful of pitchers in the running for some hardware this season.
The Rangers are 7-0 in their last seven against a team with a winning record, 19-7 in their last 26 overall, and 13-3 in Hamels’ last 16 starts against the AL West while the M’s are 10-4 in their last 14 home games, 1-6 in their last seven overall, and 5-1 in Hernandez’ last six starts. Texas Is the better team and they show it again here as Hamels earns another win against Hernandez and the Mariners.
