Coming up at Citizens Bank Park on Monday, the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Philadelphia Phillies will be kicking off their MLB series.
The Pirates are coming off a weekend set against the Reds. Pittsburgh won game one but lost the next two. In Sunday’s finale, the Pirates lost 8-0.

Meanwhile, the Phillies just played the Nationals. Philadelphia likewise won game one but lost the next two. In their finale Sunday the Phillies lost 3-2.
For Monday’s game, the Pirates will be bringing out RHP Gerrit Cole. Cole owns a 7-9 record over 20 games with a 3.55 ERA and 1.39 WHIP in 114 innings. It’s been a while since we’ve seen Cole, who has been out of action with elbow inflammation.
Pittsburgh has some nice hitters on their roster. Starling Marte has hit 151 times with 71 runs and 46 RBI. Josh Harrison holds 59 RBI with 138 hits and 57 runs. Andrew McCutchen has hit 128 times with 71 runs, 20 homers and 62 RBI.
Over on the Phillies’ side, we’ll be seeing RHP Jeremy Hellickson on Monday. In his 28 games and 10-9 record, Hellickson holds a 3.90 ERA with a 1.19 WHIP in 166 innings. In Miami his last time out, Hellickson put up a loss with six innings, nine hits and three earned.
It’s easy to find the stars on the Philadelphia roster. Odubel Herrera has hit 141 times with 72 runs and 42 RBI. Cesar Hernandez holds 138 hits with 55 runs and 36 RBI. Maikel Franco has hit 125 times with 55 runs, 22 homers and 73 RBI.
The Pirates are 2-5 in their last seven game ones of a series, and 0-4 in Cole’s last four starts. Pittsburgh is also 24-10 in Cole’s last 34 starts versus a team with a losing record, and 21-10 in Cole’s last 31 starts in game one of a series.
Meanwhile, the Phillies are 53-24 in their last 77 home games following a road trip of seven or more days, and 2-6 in their last eight game ones of a series. Philadelphia is also 0-7 in their last seven home games, and 9-4 in Hellickson’s last 13 starts.
The Pirates simply aren’t playing all that well right now, and I expect Hellickson to be able to hold things down well enough for a victory.
