The San Francisco Giants continue their pursuit of top spot in the NL West as they host the San Diego Padres on Monday night.
The Padres look to shake off a tough extra innings loss to the Colorado Rockies yesterday as they head into AT&T Park to face off with the San Francisco Giants on Monday for their series opener against their divisional and in-state rivals. San Diego has had a tough season and will fall well short of the playoffs but they will take great pride in keeping other divisional foes from getting there as well and while the Giants and Dodgers both look like they are on their way to the postseason there is still a lot of baseball left to be played and a tough series could doom the Giants who are having a miserable second half. The Friars will send right hander Paul Clemens to the mound here as he is expected to face off with Jeff Samardzija.

The Giants scored a big win on the road against the Diamondbacks yesterday and they will be out for more here in a very winnable series against the hapless Padres but at just 5-5 in their last 10 games the Giants aren’t exactly playing inspiring ball and will need a breakout performance here to get back on track. San Francisco has struggled recently in series openers as they are just 4-13 in their last 17 but match up well here at home against a light hitting Padres side and have Samardzija on the mound who gives them the edge over Clemens.
San Diego is 3-9 in their last 12 against a righty, 14-32 in their last 46 road games against a team with a winning home record and 16-36 in their last 52 road games against a righty while the Giants are 1-4 in their last five home games following a road trip, 3-7 in Samardzija’s last 10 starts, and 2-5 in their last seven Monday games. The Padres could give the Giants fits here but I just don’t see it as the Giants need to start turning things up and a home set here against a sluggish team is a great recipe for success.
