Lefty Steven Brault will be taking the mound for the Pirates on Wednesday. Over five starts and an 0-2 record, Brault holds a 3.38 ERA with a 1.54 WHIP in 24 innings. In his last start against the Reds, Brault logged a no-decision with five hits and two runs in five innings.
Pittsburgh has some pretty potent hitters in their lineup. Starling Marte has bagged 151 hits with 71 runs and 46 RBI so far. Josh Harrison sits on 138 hits with 57 runs and 59 RBI. Andrew McCutchen has hit 129 times with 71 runs, 20 homers and 62 RBI.
Over on the Phillies’ side, we’ll be seeing RHP Jake Thompson in Wednesday’s start. In seven starts and a 1-5 record, Thompson owns a 6.05 ERA with a 1.47 WHIP in 38.2 innings. In his last start, Thompson put up a no-decision in Washington with 5.1 innings, five hits and two earned.
It’s not too hard to find the big bats in the Philadelphia order. Odubel Herrera has logged 144 hits with 73 runs and 42 RBI. Cesar Hernandez has hit 139 times with 58 runs and 36 RBI. Maikel Franco holds 127 hits with 55 runs, 22 homers and 74 RBI.
The Pirates are 2-5 in their last seven game threes of a series, and 0-4 in Brault’s last four starts. Pittsburgh is also 0-4 in Brault’s last four starts on grass, and 3-12 in their last 15 overall.
As for the Phillies, they’re 3-7 in their last 10 home games versus a left-handed starter, and 0-4 in their last four games against a left-handed starter. Philadelphia is also 0-4 in their last four game threes of a series, and 0-5 in Thompson’s last five starts.
There’s not much to like about this game; it should be messy. That said, I’ll take the Phillies for a close victory at home.
