Pitching for the Twins on Thursday will be lefty Hector Santiago. In his 29 starts and 11-8 record this year, Santiago holds a 4.75 ERA with a 1.38 WHIP in 159 innings. In his last start, Santiago bagged a no-decision with seven innings, five hits and one earned.
It’s not too tough to pick out the big hitters in the Minnesota lineup. Brian Dozier leads the way on 157 hits with 99 runs, 41 homers and 96 RBI. Joe Mauer has logged 129 hits with 68 runs and 49 RBI. Eduardo Nunez is sitting on 110 hits with 49 runs and 47 RBI.
Over on the Detroit side, we’ll be seeing RHP Mike Pelfrey make the start Thursday. In his 22 games (21 starts) and 4-9 record, Pelfrey holds a 4.76 ERA with a 1.72 WHIP in 115.1 innings. In his last start, Pelfrey went five innings against Houston with four hits and no earned.
Detroit has some solid hitters at their disposal as well. Miguel Cabrera has managed 166 hits with 79 runs, 33 homers and 91 RBI. Ian Kinsler holds 160 hits with 105 runs and 78 RBI. Victor Martinez has 150 hits with 58 runs, 24 homers and 76 RBI.
The Twins are 7-19 in their last 26 Thursday games, and 0-5 in their last five game fours of a series. Minnesota is also 2-5 in Santiago’s last seven starts, and 1-4 in Santiago’s last five starts against a team with a winning record.
Meanwhile, the Tigers are 6-2 in their last eight Thursday games, and 7-3 in their last 10 game fours of a series. Detroit is also 6-1 in Pelfrey’s last seven home starts, and 6-2 in Pelfrey’s last eight starts overall.
I like Pelfrey in the pitching matchup here, so I’ll take Detroit to get the series-closing victory.
