Down at Tropicana Field on Wednesday, the New York Yankees and the Tampa Bay Rays will be doing battle as they continue their early-week MLB series.
In Tuesday’s opener, the Yankees scored four runs in the seventh inning on the way to a 5-3 victory.

Pitching for the Yankees on Wednesday will be RHP Masahiro Tanaka. In his 30 starts and 13-4 record, Tanaka holds a 2.97 ERA with a 1.06 WHIP in 193.2 innings. Tanaka took a no-decision against Boston his last time out, going seven innings with four hits and one earned.
It’s not too hard to find the major players in the Yankees order. Starlin Castro has 153 hits with 21 homers, 69 RBI and 62 runs. Didi Gregorius sits on 145 hits with 64 runs and 66 RBI. Jacoby Ellsbury has hit 135 times with 66 runs and 52 RBI.
Over on the Rays’ side we’ll be seeing RHP Alex Cobb on Wednesday. In his three starts this year, Cobb holds a 3.06 ERA, a 1-0 record and a 1.08 WHIP in 17.2 innings. Cobb bagged a win his last time out in Toronto, logging 6.2 innings with two hits and one earned.
The Rays have some pretty good hitters as well. Evan Longoria leads the charge on 165 hits with 79 runs, 35 homers and 94 RBI. Logan Forsythe has hit 129 times with 73 runs and 51 RBI. Brad Miller holds 126 hits with 68 runs, 28 homers and 75 RBI.
The Yankees are 7-2 in their last nine game twos of a series, and 5-2 in their last seven Wednesday games. New York is also 4-0 in Tanaka’s last four starts with five days’ rest, and 37-17 in Tanaka’s last 54 starts.
Meanwhile, the Rays are 4-1 in their past five Wednesday games, and 5-1 in Cobb’s last six home starts versus a team with a winning record. Tampa Bay is also 6-2 in Cobb’s last eight starts on astroturf and 5-2 in Cobb’s last seven home starts.
If the Yankees can give Tanaka a little bit of offense here, I think he can take care of the rest. I’ll take New York in this one.
