The Detroit Tigers look to keep their hat in the mix in the American League wild card chase as they host the AL Central leading Cleveland Indians on Tuesday.
The Indians scored a big road win against the Tigers yesterday and will look for an encore on Tuesday as they look to build some momentum heading into the playoffs, where they will represent the AL Central as division champions. Cleveland sits a full eight games up on the Tigers heading into tonight’s game and are just a single game back of the Red Sox and Rangers for top spot in the AL and can claim top spot and home field advantage throughout with a strong finish to the regular season. The Tribe will send Mike Clevinger to the mound as he continues to stretch out as a starter after a stint in the bullpen and he will take on Justin Verlander who is having a bounce back season on the hill for the Tigers and will look to get them back into the playoffs.

The Tigers are in a dog fight in the AL wild card race as they currently sit two games back of the Baltimore Orioles for the second and final wild card spot and need to go on a run if they’re going to qualify, though they know the Orioles and Blue Jays have a tough road ahead of them including a four game set against each other to finish the season. Detroit has the makeup of a division winner but they could miss out altogether if they’re not careful and that starts with a big effort at Comerica Park tonight after losing last night.
The Indians are 5-0 in their last five against a righty, 7-1 in their last eight games against a team with a winning record, and 4-9 in their last 13 road games while the Tigers are 5-2 in their last seven overall, 5-2 in Verlander’s last seven starts, and 10-4 in his last 14 home starts. The Indians have had the better season but the Tigers are the more desperate team with stronger bats and need a win here and they get it with Verlander throwing.
