Alfredo Simon Allows True Self to be Revealed
Clearly even the threat of Mike Gonzalez was enough to throw Alfredo Simon off his game on Saturday, as he blew his first save of the year to the extremely dangerous (HA) Indians lineup. After recording the first out Simon heard news that Gonzalez successfully threw off a mound earlier that day, and consequently went on to allow three straight batters aboard before Austin Kearns finally did him in with a game winning home run. This was clearly not Alfredo’s finest hour.
Now Mike Gonzalez is not the most effective pitcher is his own right, with a record of 0-2 to go along with two blown saves and an 18.00 ERA. But the Orioles signed him in the off season to be their closer (god knows why), and upon full recovery I feel they will give him another shot to prove his worthiness (or incompetence, take your pick). Simon’s great productivity had started to make that assumption far more unclear, but after Saturday’s debacle the door for Gonzalez to regain his closing job has remained open. My advice is that it is best to hold on to neither at this point (even Octavio Dotel looks more promising), but be prepared to act according once Mike returns from the disabled list.
