Claudia Gadelha and Jessica Aguilar fight Saturday night in Rio de Janeiro at UFC 190.
Claudia Gadelha enters this fight with a 12-1 record that includes two knockouts. Gadelha has won 50 percent of her fights by submission and is coming off a December loss to Joanna Jedrzejczyk. Gadelha is averaging 3.23 significant strikes per minute and has an accuracy percentage of 41.4 percent. Grappling, Gadelha has a takedown average of six and a takedown accuracy percentage of 54.5 percent. Gadelha is a well balanced fighter who has one of the better wrestling games on the women’s side. Gadelha is defending 74.8 percent of her strikes and is deadly one she gets her opponent to the canvas, as half of her wins have come by way of submission. This will be Gadelha’s 10th time fighting in Brazil, her hometown.
USA TODAY Sports
Jessica Aguilar is making her UFC debut and enters this match with a 19-4 record. Aguilar has won her last 10 fights and is coming off a November victory over Kalindra Faria. Aguilar’s last loss came against Zoila Frausto Gurgel in 2010 at Bellator 31. Aguilar uses her striking ability to set up her takedowns, and like Gadelha, Aguilar has an impressive submission game, as eight of 19 wins have come that way. Aguilar also doesn't waste much time ending a fight, as seven of her last 14 victories have ended in the second round or earlier. This is easily going to be the biggest fight of Aguilar’s career to date and you have to worry about nerves a bit against an experienced fighter. This will be Aguilar’s first fight in Brazil and third time outside of the United States.
Aguilar has been on a tear and although she hasn’t really been at this stage before, she’s no pushover and will enter this bout rather confident. However, Gadelha has been here done this already and will be eager to makeup for a controversial decision against Jedrzejczyk. Also, a win here could very well set up a rematch for those two.
I like Gadelha to get back in the win column.
