Warlley Alves and Nordine Taleb fight Saturday night at Rio de Janeiro in UFC 190.
Warlley Alves enters this fight with a 9-0 record and is winning 88 percent of his fights by submission or decision. Alves is coming off a November win over Alan Jouban and will fight for the third time since 2014. Alves is averaging 2.6 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy percentage of 45.5 percent. Alves is averaging 1.77 takedowns with an accuracy percentage of 75 percent. Alves is an athletic striker with terrific power despite having just one knockout under his belt. Alves has also improved his grappling game is defending 100 percent of his takedowns. Alves’ pace and power is too much for his opponents, and he really has yet to be tested in his UFC career. All of Alves’ fights have taken place in Brazil, his home country.
USA TODAY Sports
Nordine Taleb enters this fight with a 10-2 record and is winning 50 percent of his fights by knockout. Taleb has won his last three fights and is coming off an April win over Chris Clements. Taleb is averaging 3.33 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy percentage of 59 percent. Taleb is averaging four takedowns with an accuracy percentage of 85.7 percent. Taleb has really become a solid grappler, as he loves his fights on the canvas and is defending 77.7 percent of his takedowns. Taleb is a great defensive fighter and has a lot of experience, but he has yet to really put things together and that may never happen at 34 years old. This will be Taleb’s first time fighting in Brazil and first time outside of the US or Canada.
This fight is more of a toss-up than anything, but Alves clearly has the edge, as he’s younger, more balanced and has his home country behind him. Taleb is solid and no slouch, but he’s outmatched here.
