Neil Magny and Erick Silva fight Sunday night at the SaskTel Centre during UFC Fight Night.
Neil Magny enters this fight with a 15-5 record and is winning 47 percent of his fights by decision. Magny has won seven of his last eight fights but is coming off a loss this month to Demian Maia. Magny is averaging 3.68 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy percentage of 46.5 percent. Magny is averaging 2.78 takedowns with an accuracy percentage of 52.2 percent. Magny is getting this fight on short notice after an injury to Rick Story, and it gives him a chance to regain momentum after a loss a couple of weeks ago. Magny is very good on his feet and is a well balanced fighter overall, but three of his four losses have come by submission, so he can be taken advantage of when on the canvas. This will be Magny’s first fight in Canada.
USA TODAY Sports
Erick Silva enters this fight with a 18-5 record and has won 61 percent of his fights by submission. Silva has won four of his last six fights and is coming off a March victory over Josh Koscheck. Silva is averaging 2.64 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy percentage of 54.9 percent. Silva is averaging 0.93 takedowns with an accuracy percentage of 37.5 percent. Silva is a power striker who has four knockouts under his belt, but he’s most dangerous when he gets you on the canvas. Silva is quick on his feet and can lock in that submission in no time, pretty much ending a fight. The downside is that Silva has shown to struggle at times when forced to fight standing up, and he’s never lost a fight by submission. This will be Silva’s first time fighting in Canada.
This looks like a bad matchup for Magny if we’re going to be honest. Not only is Magny coming off a loss a couple of weeks ago, but he’s fighting a guy who is a submission machine. Magny isn’t built for fights on the canvas.
I like Silva to get the job done and win his third straight fight in more than four years.
