Daniel Cormier and Alexander Gustafsson fight Saturday night in UFC 192 at the Toyota Center.
Daniel Cormier enters this fight with a 15-1 record and has won 50 percent of his fights by knockout. Cormier has won five of his last six fights and is coming off a May win over Anthony Johnson. Cormier is averaging 3.63 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy percentage of 48.3 percent. Cormier is averaging 2.04 takedowns with an accuracy percentage of 41.5 percent. Cormier is one of the better wrestlers at the UFC level and his last two victories have come by submission. Cormier has improved as a striker over the years but is far more comfortable on the canvas where he can tire his opponent. The concern is that this is Cormier’s third fight this year and you wonder how he’s going to hold up at 36 y/o. This will be Cormier’s third time fighting in Houston.
USA TODAY Sports
Alexander Gustafsson enters this fight with a 16-3 record and has won 63 percent of his fights by knockout. Gustafsson has split his last four fights and is coming off a January loss to Anthony Johnson. Gustafsson is averaging 4.06 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy percentage of 37.3 percent. Gustafsson is averaging 1.96 takedowns with an accuracy percentage of 40 percent. Gustafsson is defending 86.6 percent of his takedowns and is a very aggressive striker with solid knockout power. Three of Gustafsson’s last five victories have come by way of knockout. The concern is that Gustafsson has lost two of his last three fights and has yet to win that big bout that gets him over the hump. This will be Gustafsson’s fourth fight in the United States.
Gustafsson has advantages given his striking ability and he’s far younger and should be in better shape. However, Cormier is far more experienced and will make Gustafsson fight his style of fight in order to win.
Hard to see Cormier losing here.
