Josh Barnett and Ben Rothwell fight Saturday night in UFC on Fox at the Prudential Center.
Josh Barnett enters this fight with a 34-7 record and is winning 53 percent of his fights by submission. Barnett has won six of his last eight fights and is coming off a September win over Roy Nelson. Barnett is averaging 3.12 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy percentage of 50.1 percent. Barnett is averaging 1.31 takedowns with an accuracy percentage of 57.1 percent. Barnett is a very accurate striker who is still capable of knocking guys out at the age of 38 years old. Barnett also has a strong background in grappling, as 20 of his 34 victories have come by submission. The downside with Barnett is that he is up there in age and does just have one fight under his belt since 2013. This will be Barnett’s third fight in New Jersey.
USA TODAY Sports
Ben Rothwell enters this fight with a 35-9 record and is winning 77 percent of his fights by knockout. Rothwell has won four of his last five fights and is coming off a June win over Matt Mitrione. Rothwell is averaging 2.75 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy percentage of 44.1 percent. Rothwell is averaging 1.1 takedowns with an accuracy percentage of 36.3 percent. Rothwell is a big boy who lands powerful strikes and is dangerous when he gets his opponent from a top position. Rothwell also looks like he’s gaining some consistency over his last few fights after a rocky few years with hits or misses. The downside with Rothwell is that he’s not elite in anything and has shown he’s very prone to struggling against quality strikers. This will be Rothwell’s fifth fight in New Jersey.
This fight is a toss up in my eyes, as Barnett is on the downside of his career and doesn’t have much recent fights to go off of. Meanwhile, Rothwell is in good form but does struggle against quality strikers and doesn’t have anything that really sticks out that gives him an advantage.
If forced to pick, I’d side with Barnett simply because he has the accurate punches that should give Rothwell issues.
