Beneil Dariush and Michael Chiesa fight late Saturday night on UFC on Fox 19 at the Amalie Arena.
Beneil Dariush enters this fight with a 12-1 record and has won 50 percent of his fights by submission. Dariush has won five straight fights and is coming off a August win over Michael Johnson. Dariush is averaging 3.04 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy percentage of 43 percent. Dariush is averaging 1.78 takedowns with an accuracy percentage of 36.3 percent. Dariush is quickly rising up the ranks of the UFC during his impressive winning streak. Dariush is one of the better grapplers in the lightweight division and is a threat to end it whenever he gets his opponent on the canvas, with three of his last six wins coming by submission. The main concern with Dariush are the holes defensively when it comes to strikes. This will be Dariush’s first fight in Florida.
USA TODAY Sports
Michael Chiesa enters this fight with a 13-2 record and has won 69 percent of his fights by submission. Chiesa has won four of his last five fights and is coming off a December win over Jim Miller. Chiesa is averaging 2.3 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy percentage of 39.3 percent. Chiesa is averaging 2.91 takedowns with an accuracy percentage of 40 percent. There’s no secrets when it comes to Chiesa, as he wants to wrestle his way to victory or simply wear down his opponent to the point he wins by decision. Chiesa doesn’t have much of a striking game at all, but he’s extremely dangerous if he gets to fight in his comfort zone, on the canvas. Including his exhibition career, 10 of Chiesa’s 17 victories have come by submission. This will be Chiesa’s first fight in Florida.
This fight is likely going to be won on the mat, as it’s wear both fighters are most comfortable. Both have strong submission games but also defend takedowns at a very high percentage. Something has to give. Overall, Dariush is the more polished fighter and has really taken his game to another level with victories over Michael Johnson, Jim Miller and Daron Cruickshank.
Really hard to bet against Benny in his current form.
