Rose Namajunas and Tecia Torres fight late Saturday night on UFC on Fox 19 at the Amalie Arena.
Rose Namajunas enters this fight with a 5-2 record and has won 100 percent of her fights by submission. Namajunas has split her last four fights and is coming off a December win over Paige VanZant. Namajunas is averaging 2.68 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy percentage of 47.8 percent. Namajunas is averaging 4.09 takedowns with an accuracy percentage of 71.4 percent. Namajunas is an aggressive fighter who is at her best when on the canvas, as all of her victories have ended in submission. Namajunas is also an underrated striker who has an improved jab and is defending 60.4 percent of her opponent's strikes. The concern I have with Namajunas is her takedown defense, as athletic fighters don’t struggle much to knock her off her feet. This will be Namajunas’ first fight in Florida.
USA TODAY Sports
Tecia Torres enters this fight with a 7-0 record and has won 100 percent of her fights by decision. This will be Torres’ third fight since 2015, and she’s coming off a December win over Jocelyn Jones-Lybarger. Torres is averaging 4.56 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy percentage of 50.1 percent. Torres is averaging one takedowns with an accuracy percentage of 17.6 percent. Torres is a pure striker who has a wide mix of kicks and punches to her advantage. Torres has a deep background in taekwondo and karate, and she makes it difficult for her opponent to come forward without getting tagged. Torres is defending over 70 percent of her opponent's strikes. The concern with Torres is not only her takedown defense but her ground game period, as she’s not nearly effective as she is on her feet. This will be Torres’ first fight in Florida, the state she fights out of.
This should be a fun fight between two fighters who have established themselves at the UFC level and are looking to take that next step in their careers. While I usually side with the better ground game, which in this case is easily Namajunas, Torres is undefeated for a reason and has the striking game to keep Namajunas off balance. After all, Torres did beat Namajunas back in 2013.
I really like the value with Torres to remain undefeated.
