Yair Rodriguez and Andre Fili fight Saturday night during UFC 197 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
Yair Rodriguez enters this fight with a 7-1 record and has won 57 percent of his fights by decision. Rodriguez has won his last four fights and is coming off a October win over Dan Hooker. Rodriguez is averaging 3.16 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy percentage of 49.4 percent. Rodriguez is averaging 1.67 takedowns with an accuracy percentage of 31.2 percent. Rodriguez is an accurate striker who also defends an impressive 60 percent of strikes. Rodriguez is extremely athletic and moves around well, which also helps him when he’s not able to defend the takedown. The one concern with Rodriguez is that he’s still working his way up the UFC ranks and could struggle against a far more experienced fighter. This will be Rodriguez’s first fight in Las Vegas.
USA TODAY Sports
Andre Fili enters this fight with a 15-3 record and has won 53 percent of his fights by knockout. Fili has split his last four fights and is coming off a November win over Gabriel Benitez. Fili is averaging 3.86 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy percentage of 40.1 percent. Fili is averaging 3.66 takedowns with an accuracy percentage of 45.4 percent. Fili is also a young fighter who has much more experience but is still out to prove he belongs on the big boy stage. Fili is more of a grappler than anything with aggressive takedowns, and he likes to wear down his opponent. Fili isn’t accurate with his strikes but does defend an impressive 61 percent of strikes. The downside is that Fili can struggle at times on the canvas, as he’s been submitted twice since 2014. This will be Fili’s first fight in Las Vegas.
This is probably the dark horse fight on the card, as both of these kids are up and comers eager for a big victory. Fili has the advantage in experience but Rodriguez is a tricky, long range fighter who has the better striking game.
This could truly go either way and the better play would probably be to leave it alone betting wise. However, if forced to pick, I’d side with Rodriguez simply because I think he’s the better prospect between the two.
