Leon Edwards and Dominic Waters fight Sunday at the Ahoy Rotterdam during UFC Fight Night 87.
Leon Edwards enters this fight with a 10-3 record and has won 50 percent of his fights by knockout. Edwards has split his last four fights and is coming off a December loss to Kamaru Usman. Edwards is averaging 2.17 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy percentage of 51 percent. Edwards is averaging zero takedowns with an accuracy percentage of zero percent. Edwards has been hit or miss since joining the UFC and looks for a bounce back win after replacing the injured Peter Sobotta. Edwards is an accurate and powerful striker who has the nickname “Rocky” for a reason. Edwards has the power to end a fight with one swing, but he also has an underrated grappling game with two submission victories under his belt. Also short notice should not be a big deal considering Edwards’ last fight was December. This will be Edward's first fight in the Netherlands.
USA TODAY Sports
Dominic Waters enters this fight with a 9-4 record and has won four of his fights by decision. Waters has split his last eight fights and is coming off a November loss to Dong Hyun Kim. Waters is averaging 0.71 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy percentage of 24.5 percent. Waters is averaging 4.12 takedowns with an accuracy percentage of 100 percent. Waters is in a must-win situation after losing his last two fights after taking four fights in 2015. Waters hasn’t had a knockout since 2011, but he’s a powerful guy with above-average striking power and can end a fight quickly when he connects. Waters has also had obvious success with his takedowns at the UFC level and could use that to his advantage here. Still, Shonuff has to prove himself on the big boy level before he runs out of chances.
I’m not sure how anybody can back Waters with the way he’s looked in his first two UFC fights. Edwards is the more polished fighter, proven and has the clear striking advantage to end this fight quickly. Edwards is the clear favorite here, and Waters shouldn’t get action until he can prove he deserves to be on this level.
I like Edwards to win this fight.
