Olivier Aubin-Mercier and Thibault Gouti fight Saturday night during UFC Fight Night 89 at the TD Place Arena.
Olivier Aubin-Mercier enters this fight with a 8-2 record and has won 75 percent of his fights by submission. Aubin-Mercier has won three of his last four fights and is coming off a January loss to Carlos Diego Ferreira. Aubin-Mercier is averaging 2.73 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy percentage of 50.4 percent. Aubin-Mercier is averaging 3.23 takedowns with an accuracy percentage of 31.8 percent. Aubin-Mercier is widely considered the next big fighter out of Canada, but he needs to redeem himself after his last fight. Aubin-Mercier throws very crisp and polished strikes that set up his takedowns. It’s proven to be fight over once The Quebec Kid gets his opponent on the canvas. This will be Aubin-Mercier’s ninth fight in Canada, his home country.

Thibault Gouti enters this fight with a 11-1 record and has won 55 percent of his fights by submission. Gouti has won five of his last six fights and is coming off a February loss to Teemu Packalen. We didn’t get to see much from Gouti, who was submitted in under 30 seconds in his UFC debut. There’s now reason to start questioning Gouti and his ability considering the rest of his career came against subpar fighters. From what we’ve seen, Gouti is a polished striker with a good jab and some knockout power. Gouti still has to prove his grappling and wrestling game is up to par, especially after he was forced to tap in an absurd amount of time in his debut. There’s clear questions surrounding Gouti and his lack of overall experience.
I’m not sure anyone can pick Gouti to win this fight. He’s shown nothing on the UFC level and is still a mystery overall. Aubin-Mercier has all of the tools to be great and has proven himself at this stage. Also add the fact he’s fighting in his backyard, and you have to like Aubin-Mercier to get the victory.
The Quebec Kid should get the job done here.
