Jim Alers and Jason Knight fight Saturday at the United Center on UFC on Fox 20.
Jim Alers enters this fight with a 13-2 record and has won 69 percent of his fights by submission. Alers has won six of his last eight fights and is coming off a December no contest against Cole Miller. Alers is averaging 2.98 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy percentage of 40 percent. Alers is averaging 1.43 takedowns with an accuracy percentage of 42.8 percent. Alers has been consistent throughout his career but hasn’t won a fight in more than two years due to a loss to Chas Skelly and a NC against Miller. After a couple of hiccups, this will be Alers’ chance to prove himself to UFC fans. Alers is an elite takedown artist who has produced seven submissions in his last 10 victories. Alers always has the advantage when he gets his opponent on the canvas. This will be Alers’ first fight in Chicago.
USA TODAY Sports
Jason Knight enters this fight with a 16-2 record and has won 75 percent of his fights by submission. Knight has won six of his last seven fights and is coming off a December loss to Tatsuya Kawajiri. Knight is averaging 1.87 significant strikes per minute with an accuracy percentage of 66.6 percent. Knight is averaging zero takedowns with an accuracy percentage of zero percent. Knight struggled in his UFC debut as expected against a polished and experienced fighter in Crusher. Either way, Knight has a bright future in this sport at just 23 years old, as he’s a efficient grappler and wrestler, and both of his losses have come by decisions. Knight doesn’t put himself in danger often and knows how to end fights with 11 of his 13 victories coming by some sort of stoppage.
This will be an intriguing fight for all you takedown lovers, as both guys want a fight on the canvas and have extremely high submission percentages. Whoever makes a mistake first on the mat will likely be the guy who leaves with a loss. I’m leaning with Knight to get the victory here, as he was able to hang with Kawajiri in his debut and will only learn from his mistakes. Knight is also a little more versatile than Alers and is a more accurate striker.
Give me The Kid to get the monster victory to kind of get his UFC career underway.
