NBA Injury Updates 12/30: LeBron, Henry, Gasol and More
December 30, 2013
We’re coming off a pretty busy weekend in the NBA, which makes this morning a good time to take a look at some of the notable injury situations around the league. There are plenty of big-name stars struggling with various ailments right now, and their absences are casting a notable shadow over their teams’ recent performances. Here’s a closer look at some of the most recent developments.
Luol Deng, SG, Chicago Bulls: Deng has had a bad month. He’s missed four straight games thanks to an Achilles injury, and is questionable for tonight’s matchup against Memphis. The good news here is that he’s been practicing, so he seems to be making some progress toward a recovery.
That said, Deng has only been able to play in 20 games this year due to his injury troubles, and each game he sits out pushes Chicago’s postseason hopes further and further away.

LeBron James, SF, Miami Heat: While we’re in the East, let’s head down to Miami and check in on James. He’s been out since suffering a strained groin on Friday against Sacramento, and was inactive Saturday for the Heat’s last-second win over the Trail Blazers. James was previously ruled a game-time decision for that one.
The fact that Miami was optimistic enough to hold off a little on ruling him out bodes well for his status moving forward (or could simply have been gamesmanship). He’s considered questionable for the Heat’s final game on their current road trip in Denver tonight, and we wouldn’t be surprised at all if they held him out for one more contest.
Pau Gasol, PF, Los Angeles Lakers: After missing Friday’s game against the Jazz due to an upper respiratory infection, Gasol was forced to sit out last night’s matchup against the 76ers with the same illness.
His next opportunity to play will be tomorrow night against the Bucks, and we likely won’t know his status until reasonably close to game-time. Through 28 games so far this year, Gasol is averaging 14.7 points and 9.4 rebounds per game for the Lakers.
Jimmy Butler, SG, Chicago Bulls: Let’s head back to Chicago and check in on Butler. He was limping after Saturday’s loss to the Mavericks, and it was revealed that he’d aggravated his turf toe injury during the game. That said, he’s expected to be ready to go for tonight’s game against the Grizzlies.
Butler will likely be in quite a bit of discomfort and will have to manage the pain in his toe. He’s coming off a career-high seven turnovers on Saturday and will have to clean up his ball security, injury or not.
Xavier Henry, SF, Los Angeles Lakers: We’ll return to Los Angeles now to visit with Henry, who is dealing with an injury situation of his own. He left yesterday’s game against Philadelphia due to a knee strain and wasn’t able to return. He finished with one rebound in four minutes of action.
Henry will have an MRI today to evaluate the extent of his injury, so we’ll know more about his status in the coming hours. If he’s out for a significant period of time, it’s just more bad luck for an injury-riddled lineup that’s had difficulty staying healthy this season.
