NBA Trade Updates: Potential Moves and Hot Topic Players Involved in Trade Talks Right Now
January 23, 2014
Since there are only a couple of games in the NBA tonight, this morning seems like a good time to check out some of the possible trade scenarios that have been discussed around the league. There’s still plenty of time left for potential deals to happen, so we basketball fans should expect the unexpected over the next month. Here’s the latest.
Beno Udrih, PG, New York Knicks: With the Knicks’ season falling apart at the seams, most people expect New York to be players in the trade market as we get closer to the deadline. One name that came up earlier this week was Udrih, who reportedly has requested a trade that would get him out of a Knicks uniform.
Udrih and coach Mike Woodson haven’t always gotten along, so the 31-year-old is probably looking at this as an opportunity to try and get some more minutes somewhere else. The Knicks are reportedly trying to fulfill Udrih’s request, so you can expect a deal to be imminent.
That said, Udrih is the least of New York’s problems, as they still are in desperate need of interior defense, reliable secondary scoring, rebounding, a competent and consistent point guard, etc. Oh, and they also still need to deal with the little problem of a disruptive and immature J.R. Smith.

Miami Heat Still Looking: Another interesting rumor that’s surfaced this week is centered down in Miami. The two-time defending champs are reportedly not finished in the trade market, as they’re actively seeking out a swingman to add some additional depth to their roster.
A versatile player who’s an outside shooting threat and also has enough speed to get by bigs on drives would be ideal, and would help take some of the load off LeBron, Bosh and the ever-ailing Dwyane Wade. That said, it’s not known at this point what the potential market looks like, or what the Heat would be willing to give up, so any specific names are just speculation.
Beyond this, Miami has a lot to think about as the trade deadline and playoffs approach. They’re not the only big dogs on the block anymore (think Pacers, Spurs, Thunder, Blazers, etc.) and could be in rebuilding mode as early as next season if James decides to bolt. We’ll just have to see how it plays out.
Possible Rockets Deal?: Despite the reservations over their back-loaded contracts, the trade rumors involving Houston’s Omer Asik and Jeremy Lin refuse to die out. We’ve seen a few names thrown out there as potential pieces in a deal, including C.J. Miles (Cavaliers) and Thabo Sefolosha (Thunder).
The major hurdles standing in the way of any trade for either Asik or Lin are their contracts. They’re both signed to balloon deals that will explode in salary to $15 million each next season after two years at a $5 million-per pace. On top of that, Asik isn’t even healthy. He’s been fighting thigh and knee issues that have kept him out since the beginning of December. We don’t see a deal here, but hey, stranger things have happened.
