NBA Trade Updates: Potential Moves and Hot Topic Players Involved in Trade Talks at Today's Deadline
February 20, 2014
With today marking the NBA trade deadline, there’s all sorts of speculation out there concerning a myriad of last-minute deals. Whether or not we’ll see a rush of action in the coming hours remains to be seen, but we’ve already got a couple of deals in the bag (and we’ll get to that in a moment) with the possibility of a lot more coming. Here are a few of the latest rumors and key players involved in trade talks as we cruise toward the deadline at 3:00 PM ET.
Kings-Nets Deal: First off, let’s touch on one of the trades that actually did happen last night. We talked about this one a little bit yesterday, and it came to fruition. The Brooklyn Nets picked up Marcus Thornton from the Sacramento Kings in exchange for Reggie Evans and Jason Terry, off-loading a couple of veterans from the Nets and giving the Kings some additional depth.
From Sacramento’s perspective, they’re a work-in-progress. A byproduct of this deal will be additional minutes for rookies Ray McCallum and Ben McLemore.
As for Brooklyn, Thornton’s presence will add some youthful energy to an aging roster trying to eke into the playoffs.

Rondo Latest: One of the hottest topics of conversation leading up to today’s deadline has been the Celtics’ Rajon Rondo, who is the most enticing potentially available player on the trade market. The Knicks, Kings and Raptors have all been mentioned as potential suitors for his services, and now it appears the Houston Rockets have officially thrown their name into the hat by expressing significant interest of their own.
Even at this late stage, we’d still say a Rondo trade is less apt to happen than it may appear, as the price tag associated with him is simply too great for a lot of teams to swallow. The Celtics are reportedly seeking a pair of first-rounders and a young prospect to package in a deal.
That said, it’s possible that teams could get desperate as the hours tick away.
Iman Shumpert, SG, New York Knicks: Much to their reported chagrin, the Knicks may end up stuck with Shumpert for the foreseeable future. His name has been heavily involved in potential trade talks for quite some time, and the situation has been compounded by the fact that he’s having a down-year so far (save for Carmelo, the whole Knicks team is having a down-year, but we digress).
Shumpert isn’t traveling with the team to Orlando; He’ll be staying in New York for testing on his current knee injury (suffered yesterday). It’s the same knee he had surgery on last year.
This situation throws a real wrench into the Knicks’ potential trade plans, as Shumpert would have been one of their only bargaining chips ahead of today’s deadline.
Cavaliers-Kings Potential Deal: One trade that seems to be gaining steam is a swap between the Cavaliers and Kings. The deal would include sending Jarrett Jack to Sacramento in exchange for Jason Thompson, but there’s a catch.
Cleveland has to get a third team involved in this deal in order to make room for Jack’s contract and take Thompson off the Kings’ hands. Portland has been mentioned as a potential landing spot there, but the team hasn’t given any indication they’re even interested in getting involved with all of this.
Even if this trade doesn’t turn out quite as planned, the Cavaliers have a lot of options as far as moving players around. We could see a string of moves ahead of today’s deadline if they can get anyone else to play ball.
