NBA Player Updates 5/23: Draft Rumors, TV Schedule and More
May 23, 2014
We’re going through a lull in the NBA Playoffs right now, and won’t see any more action until tomorrow night. That said, there are still plenty of topics to discuss during this downtime, so let’s check out some of the notable players out there who are making headlines.
No. 8 Spot Available: Since there aren’t any games to talk about right now, it’s a good time to focus on NBA Draft talk. One of the persistent rumors out there that has been making the rounds since this week’s lottery concerns the Sacramento Kings and the No. 8 spot.
The team wasted no time in making it known that the position was open for a trade, which makes sense given the Kings’ line of thinking heading into the 2014-15 campaign. They don’t want to waste any time waiting on another rookie to develop, but would rather land an experienced veteran to can sway them into playoff contention.
That’s a tall order, though. Sacramento finished just 28-54 last year. Their immediate needs are perimeter shooting and defense.

No. 1 Pick Too?: Interestingly enough, the Cavaliers reportedly have been receiving calls this week concerning their No. 1 draft spot. Cleveland GM David Griffin said his phone was ringing immediately after the team was selected for the top position, which puts the Cavs in an enviable place moving forward.
There’s a lot on Cleveland’s plate right now. They’ve got their pick of rookies Jabari Parker, Joel Embiid and Andrew Wiggins (with Embiid reportedly being the early favorite), but they’ve also got to put together a winning season in 2014-15 so they can make a strong case for themselves in the LeBron Sweepstakes next off-season. That’s easier said than done, but we’ll see what happens.
Deron Williams, PG, Brooklyn Nets: Tuesday will be a big day in Williams’ off-season. He’s scheduled to undergo surgery on both ankles. The procedures will include bone chip and bone spur removal, which should aid his mobility once he’s back to full health.
Williams shot just 39.5 percent from the field in the postseason, and though his PPG average increased slightly, his assists went down. If the Nets want to take that proverbial next step, they’ll have to decide whether or not it’s with Williams in the picture, so we could hear all sorts of interesting rumors and storylines this off-season.
NBA Daily Schedule: The league won’t pick back up until Saturday, which marks the beginning of a two-game weekend. Here’s a look at the schedule, along with the start times and TV networks carrying the games.
