NBA Player Updates 6/21: Cavaliers, Blatche, Off-Season Schedule and More
June 21, 2014
The NBA has been rocked by some critical off-season developments over the past few days, and those particular storylines are nowhere near their conclusions. With that in mind, let’s take our daily stroll around the league and check out some of the headlines out there to see what we can be expecting as we head toward the draft.
Cleveland Coaching Search: A big story broke out of Cleveland yesterday, with a report claiming that the Cavaliers’ exhaustive and extensive coaching search was coming to an end. The team offered the job to European coach David Blatt, which brings the team’s five-week journey to an end. Later on in the day, word broke that he had been officially hired. He'll have a three-year deal with a fourth as a team option and can make around $20 million with incentives.
Blatt is coming off a stint as coach with Maccabi Tel Aviv, who won the Euroleague this year, and was sought out by both the Timberwolves and Warriors for assistant coaching positions.
Blatt’s hiring comes at a crucial time for the Cavaliers. They’re set to pick at No. 1 overall in just five days at the 2014 NBA Draft, and that inaugural selection will dictate much of the new head coach’s success. He’ll likely have a heavy hand in the decision.

Blatche to Opt Out: The Brooklyn Nets’ big man Andray Blatche will be declining his player option and heading to free agency come July 1, according to a report released yesterday.
Blatche is coming off a 10.7 PPG average and a 5.2 RPG average during his two-year stint in Brooklyn.
Adjusted NBA Draft Top 10: Now that the news of Joel Embiid’s broken foot has really sunk in, it’s time to start thinking about what sort of impact his health will have on his draft status--and thus everyone else’s draft status.
