NBA Player Updates 7/2: New Free Agent Pickups, Off-Season Schedule and More
July 2, 2014
It’s only been one day since the free agency period of the NBA off-season has begun, and we’re already knee-deep in news and interesting happenings around the league. That said, let’s take our daily look at the headlines out there and see which players everyone keeps talking about.
Jason Kidd Deal: We haven’t touched on this yet, so let’s visit the latest news with Jason Kidd and the Milwaukee Bucks. Yesterday morning, the situation became official: Kidd was hired by the Milwaukee Bucks to be their next coach, just a day after giving up a pair of second round picks (2015 and 2019) as compensation to Brooklyn.
The move completed an odd series of events in New York, beginning with Kidd’s hire as head coach straight off the basketball court and culminating in an ultimately unsuccessful power grab that sent the eventual Hall-of-Famer to Milwaukee.
Kidd was seeking more power over player personnel decisions, and likely balked at his situation in Brooklyn after seeing other unseasoned new coaches like Steve Kerr and Derek Fisher getting contracts that dwarfed his own.
As for Brooklyn, they’re looking hard at former Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins, who would fit the bill as a veteran presence on the sidelines. We’ll have to see how the situation works itself out, but it seems there have been some bridges burned and likely some feelings hurt on both sides.

Marcin Gortat Deal: The Wizards brought back a key piece of their success yesterday by getting center Marcin Gortat to agree to terms on a five-year contract. He was an unrestricted free agent but spent less than a day on the market.
He can’t sign for another week, but Gortat will reportedly be making $60 million over the course of the contract. He’s coming off a nice 2013-14, averaging 13.2 PPG and 9.5 RPG.
Jodie Meeks Deal: Meeks had himself a very nice 2013-14 as well, and he turned that into a lucrative deal in Detroit. The Pistons got him to agree on a three-year contract worth at least $19 million.
Meeks averaged 15.7 PPG and posted 40 percent success from beyond the arc. With this new piece of the puzzle in place, don’t expect Rodney Stuckey to return to Detroit.
Patty Mills Surgery: One quick note on Spurs guard Patty Mills. He’ll need surgery on his shoulder this off-season and probably won’t be healthy for the start of next year. He’s got a torn rotator cuff and could miss up to seven months of action. We’ll revisit this story as it develops.
NBA 2014 Off-Season Schedule: It’ll be a long off-season, but we’ll have plenty of happenings (and rumors) around the league to keep us busy. The major events this summer will be the NBA Draft and the free agency period, so let’s check out the dates on those and a few others.
June 26: NBA Draft
July 1: Teams can officially begin negotiating with free agents
July 10: Players can begin signing contracts
October 4: Pre-season begins
October 28: First game of the 2014-15 season
