NBA Player Updates 7/21: Free Agent News and Rumors, Off-Season Schedule and More
July 21, 2014
The NBA’s off-season period continues to creep forward, and with it comes an interesting set of rumors and potential happenings that have every basketball fan paying close attention. Let’s take our daily look at the headlines out there and see what’s going on around the league right now.
Humphries Deal: We haven’t touched on this one just yet, so let’s check out this weekend’s deal between the Wizards and Celtics.
Saturday, word broke that the Celtics had dealt forward Kris Humphries to Washington in exchange for a protected second-round pick in 2015. Last year with Boston, he averaged 8.4 PPG and 5.9 RPG in 69 appearances.
Humphries is a 10-year NBA veteran and has spent time with Utah, Toronto, Dallas, Brooklyn and Boston. He’ll be a depth piece, but could make for a nice pickup for a Wizards team that’s on the rise.

Wiggins Latest: For the past week or so, all we’ve been hearing out of Cleveland is a bunch of trade talk involving this year’s No. 1 pick Andrew Wiggins. Now it seems that talk may end up being severely delayed--or put on the shelf forever.
Yesterday, word broke that the Cavaliers were planning on signing Wiggins to his rookie contract very soon. That wouldn’t normally be a news-making issue, but in this case it severely throws a wrench into the much-talked-about trade rumors involving Kevin Love heading to Cleveland from Minnesota.
According to league rules, once Wiggins signs his contract, the team has to wait 30 days before trading him, which would potentially put the brakes on any kind of talks between the Cavs and Timberwolves for Love.
Minnesota has long been insisting that any trade they participate in with Cleveland has to include Wiggins, and the Cavaliers initially balked at that idea. In recent days, however, they’ve relented and the two sides were reportedly exploring packages including this year’s No. 1 pick.
With this news breaking, however, it seems Cleveland is content to hold onto Wiggins--at least for now. Could this open the door for another team to swoop in and snatch up Love? It’s entirely possible, so we could see quite a bit of talk involving the Warriors and Timberwolves in the coming days. Stay tuned on this one.
