NBA Player Updates 8/1: News From Around the League, Off-Season Schedule and More
August 1, 2014
It’s been a pretty slow week so far for NBA news, which has left us plenty of time to speculate on what could potentially be happening out there in the near future. With that in mind, let’s take our daily look around the league and see which players everyone’s talking about right now.
Bayless Deal: The Bucks were active in free agency yesterday, inking free agent guard Jerryd Bayless to a new contract. The deal was announced yesterday, but the terms were not initially disclosed.
Bayless played for both the Grizzlies and the Celtics last year, posting a 9.3 PPG average in his 72 appearances. He’ll be happy to play for new Milwaukee coach Jason Kidd, who himself is one of the most celebrated point guards in recent memory.
Bayless has been in the league since 2008, when he was selected 11th overall by the Indiana Pacers. He was then traded to the Trail Blazers. He joins up with a young roster that will be feeling its way out this season.

Love Deal Latest: It appears we’re getting closer and closer to a resolution on the potential deal between the Cavaliers and the Timberwolves involving Kevin Love, as the situation has now taken another step forward.
According to the latest reports, Minnesota has narrowed their list of potential trading partners to Cleveland--and only Cleveland. Sources close to the situation feel a trade is all but inevitable, and that the Nuggets, Celtics and Warriors are now firmly out of the running.
So, what’s it going to take to make a deal happen? Well, the most prevalent proposals involve a headlining presence of Andrew Wiggins, as well as Anthony Bennet (himself a No. 1 pick in 2013) and a future first-round selection from Cleveland. On the other side, Minnesota seems insistent on including J.J. Barea in the deal, so they’ll likely send him along in a package with Love.
One thing we’ve all got to remember before we start checking the headlines every day is that according to league rules, any trade involving Wiggins can’t happen for a few more weeks. He can’t be dealt until August 23 to accommodate the rule on dealing recently-signed players.
Could something happen between now and then? Of course, but it seems like the deal is Cleveland’s to pursue, as they’ve got the most intriguing offer on the table. It looks almost certain that we’ll be seeing a very potent combination of Kevin Love, LeBron James and Kyrie Irving next season. Wow.
NBA 2014 Off-Season Schedule: It’ll be a long off-season, but we’ll have plenty of happenings (and rumors) around the league to keep us busy. The major events this summer will be the NBA Draft and the free agency period, so let’s check out the dates on those and a few others.
