NBA Player Updates 8/15: News From Around the League, Off-Season Schedule and More
August 15, 2014
Even with the slow off-season pace right now, there have been some notable happenings around the NBA this week. The schedule is out, and basketball fans everywhere are looking forward to the 2014-15 season. With that in mind, let’s take our daily look around the league and see what’s happening out there right now. Here’s the latest.
NBA 2014-15 Schedule Highlights: Now that we’ve had a full day to digest the release of the NBA’s 2014-15 regular-season schedule, we can step back and take a look at some of the key days and highlights from the campaign. Here are a few periods to look forward to over the course of the year.
There are three games on opening night on October 28, then one day later we’ll be getting our first full dose of action. One of the interesting matchups for the opener is the Lakers hosting the Rockets, which you may recognize as Kobe Bryant’s potential return from his latest injury. On that second evening, we’ll (likely) see another regular-season debut from an NBA star, when Derrick Rose steps out on the court for a home game against the Knicks.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day will be a big one for NBA fans. That one will feature four nationally-televised games and a Cavaliers-Bulls showdown.
The Spurs and Heat will play each other on February 6 (San Antonio) and March 31 (Miami).
Kevin Love’s potential return to Minnesota would be January 31.
Pau Gasol will return to L.A. with the Bulls on January 29, while Jason Kidd will come back to Brooklyn with the Bucks on November 19.
TNT will have 53 games this regular season, while ESPN will have 75, ABC will have 15 and NBATV will have 97.

Rivers Extension?: Now that Steve Ballmer is officially the new owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, he’s making it a priority to begin discussions on a contract extension with head coach Doc Rivers.
The two sides are expected to sit down very soon, and both Ballmer and Rivers are rumored to be eager about the prospects of working together.
Rivers has two years left on the three-year, $21 million deal he signed.
Cousins Injured: This is becoming a common sight with Team USA, and that’s a very disturbing thought. One of the team’s last big men DeMarcus Cousins collided with Anthony Davis during a scrimmage yesterday and injured his knee. Cousins had a bag of ice on his right knee during the end of practice.
The good news is that his injury isn’t considered serious, and he’s day-to-day at this point. Still, it’s a very scary proposition for a national team that simply keeps losing bodies--even before any actual basketball has been played.
