NBA Player Updates 8/27: News From Around the League, Off-Season Schedule and More
August 27, 2014
Even though the NBA courts have gone dark for the time being this off-season, we’ve still got plenty of news to look forward to--not to mention the exploits of Team USA in the World Cup. With that in mind, let’s take our daily look at the headlines and see what our favorite players are doing right now.
Team USA Latest: The USA Basketball team is coming off a rout of the Slovenians yesterday, and so far things are looking good for the World Cup contenders.
The United States cruised to a 101-71 victory in their most recent tune-up game, which was also their final exhibition before the FIBA World Cup.
Anthony Davis led the way as he continues to mature this off-season, posting 18 points. Kenneth Faried also had a sizable contribution with 14 points of his own.
Up next for the Americans is their first game in World Cup play on Saturday against Finland. Also in the US’ group are New Zealand, Turkey, the Dominican Republic and Ukraine, all of whom they’ll be playing on their way through the tournament.
Looming large on the horizon is a potential matchup with Spain, which would prove to be a daunting foe if the United States clashes with them. Spain boasts Serge Ibaka, Marc Gasol and Pau Gasol on its roster, easily out-sizing the small, quick lineup of the Americans. The US has more to think about in the meantime, however, as a matchup with Spain wouldn’t come until the gold-medal game.

Anderson Health: This week, we got some fresh news on the status of the Pelicans’ Ryan Anderson, and things seem to be going well.
The 26-year-old forward began participating in basketball activities with his teammates a couple of days ago, and according to him things are going “really smooth.” Anderson has been out of action since January 3, when he suffered a herniated cervical disc that required corrective surgery. Prior to that, he’d averaged a healthy 19.8 PPG and 6.5 RPG in 22 appearances.
Anderson is still a few weeks out from playing in actual practice games, but his recovery offers some hope for a Pelicans team that was just beginning to gel before getting hammered by injuries last season. Once Jrue Holiday and Jason Smith went down, so did the team’s playoff aspirations. It should be a much different story this year, and hopes are high in New Orleans.
