NBA Player Updates 8/30: News From Around the League, Off-Season Schedule and More
August 30, 2014
Today marks an interesting day in the NBA off-season. We’re getting back to meaningful basketball, and even though it’s not technically the kind we’re used to, we’ll take it. The World Cup begins today, and the US will be playing its first game in the tournament against Finland. With that in mind, let’s take our daily look around the league and see what’s happening out there.
USA Basketball Outlook: With the World Cup getting started up today, there’s no better time to take a look at the US team’s current identity and outlook for the tournament.
It’s been a long summer already for the US squad, with a multitude of injuries and personnel issues to deal with along the way. The team has experienced quite the exodus of big men, from Kevin Love pulling out amid his big-time trade to Cleveland, to the unfortunate (and gruesome) injury to Pacers star Paul George. Factor that in with Kevin Durant’s decision to stay home and you’ve got some major trouble for the USA--and the team hasn’t even hit the court in non-exhibition play yet.
Realistically, the US roster that’s going to be representing the country in the World Cup does have a good chance to win it all. That said, it wouldn’t be much of a surprise to see them fail, either. The good news is that their biggest competition, Spain, is in another grouping and the US wouldn’t have to play them until the gold-medal game.
With this depleted, smaller lineup, the Americans will have to get creative with their game strategy--not to mention accurate and smart with their shooting. Regardless of what happens, it’ll be fun to watch.
The tournament runs through September 14, which is the date for the gold-medal game.
