NBA Player Updates 9/6: News From Around the League, Off-Season Schedule and More
September 6, 2014
After another travel-filled off-day, Team USA will be back in action against Mexico this morning at the World Cup. It should be pretty interesting to see what the American squad can do throughout the remainder of the tournament, but in the meantime let’s turn our attentions toward this morning’s headlines in our daily NBA wrap-up.
Irving Outlook: During their last game in the opening stage of World Cup group play on Thursday, the US team got a significant scare when Kyrie Irving took a hard fall against Ukraine.
The good news is that Irving was able to practice the next day and he appears to be ready for action in today’s round of 16 opener against Mexico. Coach Mike Krzysewski said that Irving was initially a little sore during his most recent workout, but was able to overcome his soreness as the practice went on.
Irving is a key piece in the United States’ attack. He’s started all five games in the tournament and has posted a 9.8 PPG average.

Elsewhere in the World Cup: The US squad will be playing Mexico in Barcelona today, part of a pair of games in that city (Slovenia will play the Dominican Republic in the other game). On Sunday, Lithuania will take on New Zealand and Turkey will see Australia.
Over in Madrid, Spain will play Senegal and France will take on Croatia today, while Greece sees Serbia and Brazil will play Argentina Sunday.
Team USA’s main (and some say only) competition may come from rival Spain, but the good news is that the two wouldn’t potentially meet until a gold-medal matchup. Spain breezed through their group, utterly destroying a quintet of strong squads. They’ll definitely be tough to beat, but before the US can even think about Spain, they’ve got to get through the rest of the field first. That’s no small task.
