NBA Player Updates 9/7: News From Around the League, Off-Season Schedule and More
September 7, 2014
The World Cup has been a soothing distraction during this barren period of the NBA off-season, and there’s still more to look forward to as the tournament rolls on. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the headlines out there in the league and abroad to check out what some of our favorite players are up to. Here’s the latest.
US Team Latest: Team USA is headed to the quarterfinals in this elimination round of the World Cup, and it was a big-time effort by the Warriors’ Stephen Curry that got them there.
The sharp-shooting guard nailed a half-dozen three-pointers en route to 20 points against Mexico yesterday, helping the US team to an 86-63 victory over their southern neighbors.
Curry finished with a 7-for-10 shooting line and a 6-of-9 mark from outside, emphatically reasserting himself after a tepid tournament thus far. Partner in crime Klay Thompson posted 15 points of his own during the win.
After some early back-and-forth, this result was never really in doubt, especially considering the way Curry was playing. The US didn’t need much of a contribution from the usual big scorers, Anthony Davis (four points) and Kenneth Faried (eight points.
Now it’s on to face Slovenia in the next round on Tuesday.

Monroe Offer: We haven’t had a chance to go over this one quite yet, so let’s take a moment to check out the Greg Monroe situation in Detroit.
According to reports that emerged late last week, Monroe has signed the Pistons’ one-year, $5.48 million qualifying offer. That gives him a home in the short term, but after this season he’s scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent.
Monroe is coming off a 15.2 PPG average and a 9.3 RPG average this past season and has a 51 percent shooting percentage from the field throughout his professional career.
With the Pistons’ new additions, the stage is set for a playoff run. How far they get will likely play into Monroe’s decision on whether or not to return to Detroit next summer.
