NBA Player Updates 9/12: News From Around the League, Off-Season Schedule and More
September 12, 2014
The NBA is stuck in the middle of the off-season desert, but rest assured that we’ll be stuffed with training camp and preseason news sooner than you may think. With that in mind, let’s take our daily look around the league and see what’s happening here and abroad with the World Cup team.
World Cup Latest: And now on to the gold-medal game. Team USA took it to Lithuania yesterday in a big 96-68 win that sends them on to the championship matchup in this year’s World Cup.
It was a huge defensive effort for the Americans, as they held their opponents to 30 percent field-goal shooting. Up next is a matchup for the gold on Sunday against the winner of the France-Serbia matchup in the other bracket. Whichever country wins gold will get a guaranteed spot in the 2016 Summer Olympics (Rio De Janeiro).
The leading statistical performances came from Kyrie Irving (18 points; four assists), James Harden (16 points) and Klay Thompson (16 points off the bench).
Team USA has now beat each one of their opponents by at least 20 points. No team in history has sustained a run like that through the entire tournament, and it’s even more impressive considering that this squad didn’t do much to inspire confidence with all their injuries and withdrawals a few weeks back.

Lakers Starting Lineup: This week, a report came out detailing new Lakers coach Byron Scott’s potential starting lineup for the 2014-15 campaign--or most of it anyway.
Scott has reportedly penciled in Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash, Jordan Hill and Carlos Boozer as starters, and the final forward spot going to either Nick Young or Wesley Johnson.
If that holds true, both Julius Randle and Jeremy Lin will be coming off the bench. We’ll get a better idea of how things will play out once the season gets closer.
