The Cleveland Cavaliers will play their first preseason game of the 2014 season against Maccabi Tel Aviv at the Quicken Loans Arena.
Maccabi Tel Aviv is an Israeli basketball team that was onced coached by current Cavaliers coach, David Blatt, and they gladly accepted this preseason matchup in hopes of gaining exposure to its club. Maccabi Tel Aviv is a young basketball team that has an average age of less than 28 years old. The leading scorer last season was Devin Smith, who averaged 12.5 points on 67.5 percent shooting, and he once played for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Marquez Haynes is a speedy guard who can cause matchup problems for the Cavs and provide a spark in transition. Guy Pnini is the most experienced player on the team in his sixth season and is somebody who can do a little bit of everything and averaged close to three assists last season. Maccabi Tel Aviv will have a lot to prove considering it is going up against its former coach, but at the end of the day this is just a big opportunity for the team to bring attention to basketball in Israel.

This will be the first time everybody gets the chance to see the new and improved Cleveland Cavaliers, which now feature a big three of LeBron James, Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving. You can expect all three players to put on a show for the home fans but don’t expect any to see significant minutes in the first preseason game. The Cavs have to be more interested in using this game to see who is willing to step up and provide depth around their star power. How do the youngsters Tristan Thompson and Dion Waiters look with another year under their belts? Can undrafted Alex Kirk develop into a decent player to provide much needed depth at center? Although the Cleveland Cavaliers are one of the favorites to win it all, they’ll treat this preseason game as a chance to get better and let the younger players prove themselves.
