The Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Lakers kick off the 2014 NBA season Tuesday with a matchup at the STAPLES Center.
The Houston Rockets struck out on Chris Bosh, but were able to add veteran players such as Jason Terry and Trevor Ariza. With another season of James Harden and Dwight Howard still in place, the Rockets feel like they have what it takes to be one of the better teams in the West. One thing that could really help the Rockets take that next step is another improved year from Terrence Jones, who really shined in his second season last year. The Houston Rockets also have to improve their defensive numbers from a year ago if they’re going to be taken seriously as a championship contender. From an offensive standpoint not too many teams can compete with the Rockets and with another season of the same players, this is a team that should be a lot more comfortable.

The Los Angeles Lakers are one of the bigger question marks in the NBA because not too many people know what to expect. The good news is that the Lakers have a healthy Kobe Bryant, who is sure to do whatever he can to keep LA competitive. The bad news is that there isn’t too much depth outside of Kobe, especially with Steve Nash ruled out for the season and Nick Young out for 6-8 weeks. The Lakers do have an inspired Carlos Boozer and a possible ROY candidate in Julius Randle, but not much else to be excited about. A more consistent Jeremy Lin could go a very long way for the Los Angeles Lakers to have a successful season. Defense is going to be an issue for the Lakers most nights, but as long as Kobe stays healthy, Los Angeles will always have a fighting chance.
The Rockets are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 vs. the NBA Pacific and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall. The Lakers are 0-4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games and 4-9-1 ATS in their last 14 vs. the Western Conference. The Rockets are 10-4 ATS in the last 14 meetings aginst the Lakers.
The Lakers will have plenty of chances to make you money this season, but I'm taking the over in this game. Neither team is going to be great defensively but have plenty of offensive weapons to make a splash. Take the over before the number gets any higher.
