The Utah Jazz and Dallas Mavericks play Thursday night at the American Airlines Center.
The Utah Jazz play back-to-back games after losing to the Houston Rockets Wednesday, 104-93. The Jazz played little defense in the loss, allowing the Rockets to shoot 51.9 percent from the field and 51.9 percent from downtown. When you combine that with the fact the Jazz shot 3-18 from deep, it’s going to result in a defeat. Alec Burks led the way with 18 points, Gordon Hayward had eight rebounds and seven assists, and Trevor Booker had 14 points off the bench. Besides the poor shooting from beyond the arc, the Utah Jazz played a fairly clean game and hung around with one of the better teams in the West for three quarters. While nobody expects much from the Jazz this season, it’ll be interesting to see if they can bring the same competitive fire on the road.

The Dallas Mavericks had a day off after dropping a last-second loss to the San Antonio Spurs on the road. While nobody settles for moral victories in this league, the Mavericks have shown many times now that they can compete with the NBA champs. Monta Ellis scored 26 points in the season opener, Dirk Nowitzki had 18 points and Devin Harris played a complete game off the bench that could eventually lead to a starting role. I expect a better game from Chandler Parsons, as he clearly was playing with nerves on his new team, shooting 2-10 from the field in 34 minutes. While not always the sexiest team, the Dallas Mavericks have shown that they’re more than capable of beating anybody in this league and will be a force to be reckoned with as long as they remain healthy.
The Jazz are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games playing on 0 days rest and 2-5-2 ATS in their last 9 vs. Western Conference. The Mavericks are 8-1 ATS in their last 9 vs. Western Conference and 8-1 ATS in their last 9 games overall. The road team is 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings.
I like the under in this matchup simply because the Utah Jazz have shown to be offensively challenged. The total seems a little too high for my taste, as I expect a slower paced game and fewer shots.
