The Los Angeles Clippers and Los Angeles Lakers play Friday night at the STAPLES Center.
The Los Angeles Clippers won their season opener Thursday against a banged up Oklahoma City Thunder squad, 93-90. It certainly wasn’t the prettiest performance from the Clippers, as they shot just 39.1 percent from the field and 23.3 percent from three. The Clippers let a Thunder team that was without Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook hang around until the final seconds. The good news for the Clippers is that Blake Griffin and Chris Paul combined for 45 points, while Jamal Crawford chipped in his usual 16 points off the bench. However, the Clippers will need a much better performance from J.J. Redick, who was a poor 1-10 from the field in 30 minutes of play. The Los Angeles Clippers are still one of the better teams in the league and it’s just one game, but you should expect this team to play better on both sides of the ball in this matchup.
USA TODAY Sports
The Los Angeles Lakers have quickly dropped to 0-2 on the season and have shown very few signs of even being competitive. In just two games, the Lakers have allowed a combined 227 points and are allowing teams to shoot 49 percent from the field. We knew defense was going to be a key issue for the Lakers, but at this rate it’s tough to see them winning many games if that keeps up. Dating back to last season, the Los Angeles Lakers have lost 15 of their last 17 games when allowing 100-plus points. Offensively, Kobe Bryant is leading the way with 25 points per game and Ed Davis is averaging 12.5 points per game. The Lakers are very limited on both sides of the ball, but it’s important they focus much of their energy on defense if they’re going to have any shot this season.
The Clippers are 7-2-1 ATS in their last 10 Friday games and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 road games. The Lakers are 1-4-1 ATS in their last 6 games playing on 1 days rest and 2-6-1 ATS in their last 9 games overall. The Clippers are 16-5 ATS in the last 21 meetings.
I'm not laying such a big number with a team that's coming off a back-to-back. However, the over has hit in 11 of the last 13 meetings between these two teams. With the way the Lakers are playing defense, I'm betting that the trend continues.
