The Los Angeles Lakers try again for their first win of the season when they host the Charlotte Hornets tonight.
The Los Angeles Lakers have lost their first five games of the season by an average of 14.8 points but showed plenty of fight in a 112-106 loss against the Suns last Tuesday. Kobe Bryant led the way with a game-high 39 points but shot just 14 of 37 from the field with no other Laker scoring more than Jeremy Lin's 18 points, but the Lakers put on 106 points which is more than enough to win a game. However, LA's defense was just deplorable in transition against the speedy guards of the Suns who torched them on turnovers, missed shots and even on quick inbounds plays after made shots. Being so shorthanded, the Lakers just don't seem to have the footspeed to keep up with a team like the Suns so LA actually did quite well to keep the game within single digits.

Meanwhile, the Charlotte Hornets have bounced back from three straight losses with a couple wins on the trot after taking down the Hawks by 122-119 in double overtime on Friday. Al Jefferson dominated the paint with 34 points on 15 of 24 shooting Gary Neal added 23 points off the bench, but with the game on the line and the clock winding down, the ball fell into Lance Stephenson's hands who banked in the game-winning three to send the Hornets to 3-3 on the season and 3-1 at home.
In ATS trends, the Lakers are 1-4 ATS in their last five games after allowing 100 points or more in their previous game and 1-5 ATS in their last six against a team with a losing record, while the Lakers are 1-3-1 ATS in their five games this season and 1-5-2 ATS in their last eight games at home.
Head to head, the Hornets are 8-1 ATS in the last nine meetings in Los Angeles but the Underdog is 15-3 ATS in the last 18 meetings overall.
My first thought was to dial up an automatic win and cover for the Hornets who are clearly the better team by a fair margin. However, the Lakers will come into this game after four days to rest and regroup which now has me thinking that this could be the game they actually get over the hump. No real confidence in this pick, but I'm actually leaning with the Lakers at home with the points in this one.
