The Dallas Mavericks look to continue rolling as they host the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday night.
The Los Angeles Lakers lost on Christmas Day 113-93 in Chicago to the Bulls as Kobe Bryant sat out for the second straight game. It’s unclear whether Bryant shutting himself down is truly injury or just frustration, but I would venture to guess we may see him in action here against the Mavs. Bryant is averaging 24.6 points, five rebounds and five assists to lead a Lakers team that lacks much scoring depth. The Lakers actually did manage to win a marquee game without Kobe just three days ago, beating the Warriors by ten in a game where seven players (including Ed Davis , Wesley Johnson and Jordan Hill) scored in double figures. The Lakers will need plenty of scoring in this contest going against the high-powered Mavericks, especially considering that the Lakers defense ranks last in the league while allowing 109.2 points per game. The Lakers are just 5-9 in road contest this season.

The Dallas Mavericks are starting to look like a true playoff contender sitting at 20-10 with a strong home court edge of 10-5. Unfortunately the most recent two games for Dallas have both been losses, falling to decent competition in the Hawks and Suns. Rajon Rondo hasn’t been in peak form just yet through three games with the Mavs, but he’s still playing at a high level and should complete his transition soon enough. The only concern is whether Dirk Nowitzki and Monta Ellis retain their unique scoring abilities with the addition of a new piece in the offense. Rondo isn’t typically known as a shooter, but this shot and point totals are higher than we’re accustomed to seeing in the early going which could adjust over the coming weeks. The Mavericks will have to like their chances of playing the fast break and moving the ball against a pitiful Lakers defense in this spot.
The total is on the high end of the spectrum here but I see this one going over given the Lakers inability to get stops and the Mavericks ability to score. It's not a strong play due to lack of faith in the Lakers offense.
