USA TODAY Sports
Position: Small Forward
Career Stats: 6.7 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 2.7 assists and 1.2 steals
Strengths: J.P. Tokoto has an elite athlete with great size. Tokoto jumps out of the gym and is most effective in transition for easy buckets. Tokoto sees the floor well and does a good job of setting his teammates up. Tokoto could play either shooting guard or small forward at the next level. Tokoto rebounds well for his position and has quick hands on the defensive end. Tokoto has quick feet and has the potential to be an elite on-ball defender. Tokoto is comfortable guarding multiple positions. J.P. Tokoto plays with high energy, has a great work ethic and comes with zero off-the-court issues.
Weaknesses: J.P. Tokoto needs to drastically improve his jump shot and his rage overall. Tokoto needs to add bulk and strength to his upper-body. Tokoto is very raw offensively and struggles to create his own shot off the dribble. Tokoto shot just 54.4 percent from the free throw line.
Projection: It was surprising that J.P. Tokoto left North Carolina for the draft, as he had potential to improve his stock with a more consistent jumper. Still, there are things to like with Tokoto as a second round pick. Tokoto is a terrific athlete and defends extremely well, two things that NBA teams are always looking for. I’d certainly spend a second round pick on Tokoto, as he has great bench potential right away if he keeps working.
