USA TODAY Sports
Position: Shooting Guard
Career Stats: 13.2 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 2.3 assists and 0.9 steals
Strengths: Dez Wells is a well built athlete with a strong, stocky upper-body. Wells has a quick first step and finishes strong through contact. Wells is an aggressive attacker and can finish with either hand. Wells shot 76.5 percent from the free throw line. Wells is capable of spending some time at point guard. Wells has good lateral quickness and can be a feisty defender. Wells toughness and strength allow him to defend multiple positions. Wells has a high basketball IQ and usually makes the right basketball decision. Dez Wells is a hard worker and doesn’t come with any off-the-court issues. Wells plays hard and has shown flashes of being a vocal leader.
Weaknesses: Dez Wells must improve his shooting consistency, especially from beyond the arc. Wells can be turnover prone, as he averaged 3.3 turnovers as a senior. While there’s a lot of positives, Wells doesn’t do one thing that really separates himself. Wells doesn’t have great size for the shooting guard position. Wells is already is 23 years old.
Projection: Dez Wells is built a lot like Dwayne Wade and can be extremely effective at the next level with his ability to drive the basketball. The main issues I have with Wells are his lack of height and the fact he’s already 23 years old. Either way, I’d extend Wells an offer to camp (if he isn’t drafted) simply due to the positives he brings on offense and the way he plays the game. Wells could be a nice piece to come off the bench.
