The Orlando Magic ended up with the fifth overall pick in the 2015 NBA draft and have a chance to add even more talent to a team that’s quietly on the rise. The Magic can go a couple of directions with this pick, but the best selection would be Kristaps Porzingis out of Latvia.
Porzingis is a stretch four at damn near seven feet tall. He can put the ball on the floor, get to the rim in about two steps and can knockdown the NBA three ball. Porzingis needs to add weight to become a more effective finisher at the rim and become a better defender, but he has a lot of promising tools that make me believe he’ll thrive with this young Orlando team.

Porzingis moves well for a big, is an above-average ball handler and will contest nearly every shot in the paint with his length. The Magic are building an impressive starting five, and Porzingis could be the final piece to complete the puzzle.
The Magic have their backcourt in Elfrid Payton and Victor Oladipo locked up for the next couple of years. Nikola Vucevic is sticking around after a recent contract extension and Orlando will likely do what it can to keep Tobias Harris after an impressive season. The only real missing piece for the Magic is at power forward, as Channing Frye nor Dewayne Dedmon are the long term answers. Assuming Harris stays and Porzingis is selected, the Magic could have a starting lineup where everybody is 24 years old or younger. Talk about a team to watch in a couple of years.
The Magic were ranked 29th this season in blocks and 25th in total rebounds. It’s clear size is an issue for Orlando, and the Magic could use a boost from the outside, as their three-point percentage of 34.7 percent was below league average.
It’s extremely rare to have a guy nearly seven feet tall able to be such a force in the paint defensively and stretch the floor offensively by knocking down the long ball.
It may be a bit of a gamble considering Porzingis is coming from overseas, but this has the potential to be a home run pick and could give the Magic one of the more intriguing starting lineups for years to come.
