NBA Trade Updates: Potential Moves and Hot Topic Players Involved in Trade Talks Right Now
January 13, 2016
We’ve got a big NBA schedule coming up tonight, and with that in mind it’s a great time to check out some of the current trade rumors from around the league. There are only a few weeks left before the deadline, so we’re going to see a lot more talk and speculation before then. Here are some of the current hot-topic players in the rumor mill.
Let’s start out in the Big Apple and check out what could potentially be happening with the Knicks. New York has been mentioned alongside several big-name players, and there’s one proverbial elephant in the room when it comes to what they’d have to give up to get some new talent.
That elephant is of course Carmelo Anthony, who is reportedly gaining some significant interest from the Miami Heat. Even though Anthony has evolved his game to more of a support role among up-and-coming Knicks stars like Kristaps Porzingis, he’s still got that win-now mentality intact. New York won’t be raising any championship banners for at least the next couple of years, and Miami has been playing very well thus far. They’re definitely a much better chance to get to the Finals than the Knicks are right now.
Much of this potential trade’s traction will have to do with what the teams’ records look like over the next month. If the Knicks start dropping games, you can expect them to shop Anthony a little more vigorously, and the Heat could be a likely destination--possibly in exchange for a young talent like Justise Winslow.

On the other side of the country, we have the Lakers, whose trade buzz has been dying out a bit in recent days. As of right now, speculation dictates that the team will hold on to their assets, which include young talents like Julius Randle and D’Angelo Russell.
L.A. is chalking up this year as Kobe’s swan song, and they’re already looking toward 2016-17 as a jumping-off point in a rebuilding effort. That means they’ll likely be players in free agency this off-season and try to put together a contender within the next few years that way. They may make a move or two, but no big splashes seem to be on the horizon.
The Celtics are reportedly shopping a few players, chief among them David Lee. He hasn’t had the greatest season thus far, and carries a sturdy $15.5 million salary that Boston would love to get off the books. Expect to hear his name among trade rumors for the Celtics over the next few weeks.
We’ll close out today with a look at the Pistons’ Brandon Jennings, who has been all over the NBA trade rumor mill. He’s still getting his groove back after returning from an Achilles injury, but seems to be a prime target for a handful of teams.
Jennings has been linked to the Knicks as a possible destination, but the Rockets and Suns have gotten some rumors going as well. While neither of those spots seem like they’d be a good fit, that hasn’t stopped the talk.
Jennings will be a free agent this off-season, so his “rental” status may torpedo his trade value. All of that said, the Pistons won’t pass up a good deal if they believe it will help them, so anything is possible.
