The New York Liberty and Washington Mystics open the season Saturday night at the Verizon Center.
The New York Liberty are on a terrific course with Bill Laimbeer leading the way at head coach. The Liberty are a tough defensive team that doesn’t allow anything easy and does a wonderful job of crashing the boards. Tina Charles and Epiphanny Prince lead the way on the offensive end, while Kiah Stokes and Sugar Rodgers provide the needed depth to make a championship run. I’m very high on the New York Liberty this season, as they’re one of those teams that nobody in the WNBA wants to play due to their physicality and elite defense. The Liberty have allowed less than 70 points in five of their last 11 regular season games.

The Washington Mystics look to bounce back after losing five of their last six regular season games and falling apart more in the postseason. The Mystics have a solid 1-2 punch in Emma Meesseman and Stefanie Dolson, and those two will have to carry the load until the rest of the team returns to the lineup. The Mystics will start the season without Kara Lawson, Tierra Ruffin-Pratt and Ivory Latta. Still, the Washington Mystics have three players who finished last season with more than 100 rebounds, and they have players who are capable of coming through in the clutch. The Mystics just have to tread water until everyone returns, and it helps they open the season with three straight home games.
The New York Liberty are going to win a lot of games this season, and they should have little trouble beating a Wasington team that isn't at full strength. The Mystics just don't have the depth to hang with a healthy New York team that has its eyes set on a WNBA Finals apperance.
Take the road team and the small line.
