Venezuela and Serbia meet Saturday in the opening match of the men’s basketball tournament in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
Venezuela will make just its second ever appearance in the Olympics and first since its 11th place finish in 1992. Venezuela has to be excited given the opportunity and should be confident after winning gold in the 2015 FIBA Americas Championship, which included a win over Argentina in the finals. Venezuela is a very young team with just two players at least 30 years old, and it’s going to want to get up and down and rely on its athleticism and youth. Venezuela will be led by captain Jose Vargas Gregory Vargas, who does a fine job of scoring and setting up teammates. Venezuela may be the weakest team in group A due to a lack of depth and overall talent. Venezuela doesn’t have a single NBA player on its roster, but does have Ole Miss Rebel Anthony Perez.

Serbia makes its first Olympic appearance since 2004 and looks to build on its impressive fourth place finish in the 2015 EuroBasket. Serbia is certainly no stranger to international success and is also quite young with just one player who is 30 years old. Serbia will be led by two NBA big men in Denver Nuggets Nikola Jokic and Detroit Pistons Boban Marjanovic. Marjanovic may or may not play due to his ongoing contract talks, but those guys will make it tough to come into the paint, while Bogdan Bogdanovic and Marko Simonovic can stretch the floor from the outside. Overall, Serbia has proven it can compete against top competition and has won 24 gold medals when you include all of the international competitions. Serbia may be the sneaky team in group A.
Venezuela is a team that’s likely just happy to be here after going so many years without an Olympic appearance. Add the lack of experience with the overall lack of talent, and Venezuela may struggle to win a single game this tournament.
Serbia is well coached and has some pretty good skilled players. Give me Serbia by double digits.
