Australia and Venezuela meet Sunday in their fifth match of the men’s basketball tournament in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
Australia look to finish group play strong after an impressive 3-1 record. In the 93-68 win over China, Australia shot 56.1 percent from the field and 38.9 percent from beyond the arc. Australia allowed 48.9 percent shooting from the field and 27.3 percent shooting from deep. Cameron Bairstow led the way with 17 points and nine rebounds while Brock Motum had 15 points and two assists. David Andersen was the third double-digit scorer and Matthew Dellavedova had eight assists. Australia continues to move the ball around and is shooting a ridiculous percentage nearly every game. Australia’s only loss was to the United States by 10 points, so this is a club that’s not going to be intimidated by anybody.

Venezuela need a victory here after a rough 1-3 start to the tournament. In the 96-56 loss to France, Venezuela shot 35 percent from the field and 17 percent from beyond the arc. Venezuela allowed 61 percent shooting from the field and 33 percent shooting from deep. Gregory Echenique led the way with 12 points and three rebounds while Nestor Colmenares had 10 points and four assists. José Vargas grabbed seven rebounds and Heissler Guillent dished three assists. Venezuela has simply been outmatched in this tournament after three blowouts and a four-point victory against China. Venezuela has simply had a hard time finding consistent offense, as it’s scored 72 or less points in all four games.
Australia has proven itself as one of the top teams in the tournament and has been unstoppable offensively. Given what we've seen from Venezuela so far, this is bound to be another ugly contest. This is sure to get ugly.
Australia should win this contest by 20-plus points.
