Australia and Lithuania meet Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the men’s basketball tournament in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
Australia finished second in group A with an impressive 4-1 record. In the 81-56 win over Venezuela, Australia shot 52.5 percent from the field and 42.1 percent from beyond the arc. Australia allowed 35 percent shooting from the field and 22.7 percent shooting from deep. Chris Goulding led the way with 22 points and two assists while Joe Ingles had 11 points and one rebound. Ryan Broekhoff was the third double-digit scorer and Damian Martin dished four assists. Australia has crushed all of its competition leading up to this point and its only loss was a 10-point contest to the United States. As long as Australia controls the pace and locks down defensively, this is the one team most want to avoid in single elimination.

Lithuania has to be happy with a 3-2 record coming out of group B. In the 81-90 loss to Croatia, Lithuania shot 47.8 percent from the field and 39.3 percent from beyond the arc. Lithuania allowed 53.3 percent shooting from the field and 57.9 percent shooting from deep. Mantas Kalnietis led the way with 26 points and 11 assists while Paulius Jankūnas had 18 points and five rebounds. Jonas Valančiūnas was the third double-digit scorer and Renaldas Seibutis dished four assists. Lithuania started off hot but has now lost back-to-back games and has been outscored 199-140 during the process. Lithuania has to do a better job on the defensive end if it’s going to advance to the semifinals for the first time since the 2008 olympics.
Besides the United States, no team has been as consistent as Australia has been. Australia controls the pace of the game and frustrates opponents with its in-your-face defense. Not to mention it's sharing the ball and scoring a ton of points offensively. Lithuania is also in poor form entering the quarters with back-to-back losses.
Australia should roll big in this game.
