The Dallas Mavericks and New Orleans Pelicans clash Saturday night in preseason action at the CenturyLink Center.
The Dallas Mavericks enter the preseason with another aging roster and hope it’ll be enough to make a push for a playoff spot in the Western Conference. Everybody knows about Dirk Nowitzki, Deron Williams and Wesley Matthews, but the Mavs also added former Golden State Warriors’ Andrew Bogut and Harrison Barnes. Dallas has a locked in starting five and it’s enough to make the Mavericks interesting once again under coach Rick Carlisle. However, young players such as Kyle Collinsworth, Dorian Finney-Smith, A.J. Hammons and Seth Curry must prove they can take a load off with the second unit. The NBA is a young man's game, and you’re not going to get far when counting on several guys who are pushing their mid 30s. Finding depth is the key for the Mavericks this preseason.

The New Orleans Pelicans are on the complete opposite side of the coin, as they have zero players who are above the age of 30 years old. Led by Anthony Davis, Jrue Holiday and Tyreke Evans, the Pelicans hope they have enough to get back to the playoffs under Alvin Gentry in his second season as head coach. New Orleans has to develop chemistry with its news players, including Terrence Jones, Lance Stephenson, Langston Galloway, Solomon Hill and E'Twaun Moore. Outside of the core players, the Pelicans have a fairly new roster and need to gell as quickly as possible. There’s also the Buddy Hield factor, as he was one of the top players in college basketball last season and is a guy who simply gets buckets and plays with supreme confidence. Win or lose, the Pelicans will be fun to watch.
The Pelicans are 0-7 ATS in their last 7 Saturday games and 2-7 ATS in their last 9 games as a home favorite. The Mavericks are 10-3 ATS in their last 13 road games and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 Saturday games. The over is 44-19 in Pelicans last 63 home games and the under is 6-2 in Mavericks last 8 road games.
The Pelicans youth should be the difference in this game against the older Mavericks. New Orleans has a lot of young guys eager to prove themselves and willing to run the floor. The Mavs are older and slower, and simply a veteran team that likes to go through the motions in the preseason, saving itself for when it matters. I'll take the Pelicans and the low line considering they have something to play for this time of the year.
