The Detroit Pistons and Brooklyn Nets begin their 2016 preseason Thursday night at the Barclays Center.
The Detroit Pistons look to build on last years successful season and return a young, hungry core eager to take that next step. The Pistons are led by potential stars in Andre Drummond and Reggie Jackson, but have an intriguing group of other guys who give coach Stan Van Gundy something to work with in his third season with Detroit. It’s going to be interesting to see what Stanley Johnson does in his second season and how effective Tobias Harris can be in a full offseason with the Pistons. The Detroit Pistons don’t have a single player older than 29 years old, so this is a team that’s going to be competitive in exhibition play as a ton of young guys are itching to prove they belong. The Pistons are a team to keep an eye on during the preseason and early in the regular season

The Brooklyn Nets are a franchise that is still trying to find its way and could use anything positive to help pave the way. The Nets have seven players who are 28 years or older and are hoping that veteran presence will help the younger players. The Nets are still led by Brook Lopez, but the rest of the team are big question marks. The addition of Jeremy Lin adds flair to the backcourt and Luis Scola is a guy who can still contribute at both ends of the court. However, preseason is about finding how many of the young guys can play, and for the Nets, I’ll be looking at players such as Yogi Ferrell, Isaiah Whitehead, Anthony Bennett and Sean Kilpatrick. The Brooklyn Nets should just be winging it in the preseason looking for any glimmer of hope before things get real.
The Pistons are 5-11 ATS in their last 16 Thursday games and the under is 41-19-1 in Pistons last 61 Thursday games. The under is 8-3 in Nets last 11 Thursday games and the Nets are 1-9 ATS in their last 10 games overall. The Pistons are 0-4 ATS in the last 4 meetings in Brooklyn and 2-6 ATS in the last 8 meetings overall.
I'm not going to lay these type of numbers in preseason ball unless we're talking about a huge mismatch. The Nets have a lot of open playing time and guys will be fighting for chances to prove themselves. Sure, the Pistons are the better team, but this is preseason where anything can happen, and I feel more comfortable taking my free buckets.
