The Utah Jazz and Portland Trail Blazers open up their 2016-17 NBA season Tuesday night at the Moda Center.
The Utah Jazz haven’t made the playoffs since the 2011-12 NBA season but have been a trendy pick to snap that drought. The Jazz have been a rising team the last couple of years and finally added some offensive punch to go with their quality defense. The additions of Joe Johnson, George Hill and Boris Diaw adds depth and an offensive spark to help out Rodney Hood and Gordon Hayward. The problem with the Jazz right now are the injuries, as Hayward is out indefinitely with a finger injury, while few other players are banged up as well. Derrick Favors, Alec Burks and Diaw are questionable with injuries. The Utah Jazz have lost their last three regular season openers.

The Portland Trail Blazers were a surprise team in the NBA last season and hope to build on those efforts by possibly being a top-four team in the West. The Trail Blazers will continue to go as far as Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum carry them, but Portland added much needed depth with the additions of Festus Ezeli and Evan Turner to the mix. Players such as Maurice Harkless and Al-Farouq Aminu also shouldn’t go unnoticed, as they contributed big time for the Trail Blazers and should see a heavier workload this season. The Trail Blazers have serious sleeper potential this season, as Portland did last year. The Portland Trail Blazers have won three of their last four regular season openers. Shabazz Napier and Ezeli are questionable with injuries.
The Jazz are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 road games and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games following a ATS loss. The Trail Blazers are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 vs. NBA Northwest and 6-2 ATS in their last 8 Tuesday games. The over is 13-3 in the last 16 meetings in Portland and the over is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings overall.
The Utah Jazz aren't in the best spot right now given all of the injuries, including the one to their best player in Hayward that will keep him out for a while. You guys know I was riding the Portland Trail Blazers heavily last season and we cashed a lot of tickets. I'm high on Portland again and with the Jazz banged up, the Trail Blazers should have little trouble covering this number. Portland is a very good home team that has the shooting to make it tough for the Jazz to keep up.
